Misting systems provide affordable and efficient cooling

What are misting systems?

The primary characteristic that identifies misting systems is the fine droplets they produce. It is the fineness of these drops that distinguishes misting from other forms of water use and makes this process so useful for a whole range of application.

Mist droplets generally range between 30microns to 70microns in diameter. Some companies suggest that even 10micron droplets can be considered as mist. What really matters is that the droplet sizes produced by the misting systems are matched to the requirements of each specific application. In order to achieve effective evaporative cooling droplets must evaporate as fast as possible.

It is the size of the droplets that affect the speed at which they evaporate. Under normal conditions small droplets evaporate a great deal faster than large droplets. Therefore the efficiency of misting systems is greatly affected by the size of the droplets they produce.

Components of a misting system The main components are the pressure pump, filters, control system, tubing or piping, fittings and nozzles. A pressure pump must be sized according to the output flow rate produced by the amount of nozzles within a system.

Under sizing may damage the pump in the long run while over sizing can add to the cost of a system and lead to problems with heat dissipation. Micro filtration is of absolute importance to prevent nozzle blockages and reduce overall maintenance.

Temperature or humidity or both can be used as an input to control a misting system. Piping should ideally be rated to 3 times the operating pressure of the system for safety purposes. All fittings should be non-corroding and nozzles must be chosen for the quality of the mist they produce.

Different kinds of misting systems There are 3 common kinds of misting systems available on the market today; low pressure, mid pressure, high pressure. Low pressure systems are more commonly used in agriculture, gardening and for domestic purposes.

Low pressure systems (2BAR -6BAR) are generally much cheaper and produce inferior but nonetheless acceptable results. Mid pressure systems (10BAR – 25BAR) are used mostly in agriculture where more control over results are required while still achieving a low capital outlay.

High pressure misting systems (55BAR -120BAR) are the top of the range and produce excellent results in most conditions. High pressure systems are favored by many and are more costly due to the strength of the materials that must be used in order to withstand the high pressures at which the systems operate.

Misting systems are suitable for a range of applications including evaporative cooling, humidification and dust control. No matter whether it’s for home use, commercial or industrial a suitable system can always be found.
